How do you convert Overworld coordinates to the Nether?

Divide the Overworld X and Z by 8 and round to the nearest block — that 8:1 ratio is how the Nether compresses horizontal distance. The Y (height) coordinate stays exactly the same. Going the other way, multiply the Nether X and Z by 8 to get the Overworld position.

Does the Y coordinate change between dimensions?

No. Only X and Z use the 8:1 ratio. Y is shared 1:1, so a portal at Y=64 in the Overworld links to Y=64 in the Nether. This calculator keeps Y locked across both sides for you.

Why do my Nether portals link to the wrong place?

When you travel through a portal, Minecraft looks for an existing portal near the converted coordinates and builds a new one if none is found — which can mislink portals that are close together. Build both ends by hand at the calculated coordinates, and keep separate portals at least 128 Nether blocks (1,024 Overworld blocks) apart so each pair links to the right partner.

Does this work for both Java and Bedrock Edition?
